Formula & assumptions
Choose whether the percentage tip applies before or after tax. Bill amounts and the tip are rounded to cents before splitting. If equal shares cannot be represented in whole cents, some people pay one cent more so the shares add up exactly. This is an even split, not a way to allocate different individual orders. The percentage is your choice, not a recommended tipping rule.
Worked example
An 80 subtotal, 8 tax and 20% pre-tax tip give a 16 tip and 104 total. Four people each pay 26. A 10 total split three ways is 3.33, 3.33 and 3.34.
How to use this calculator
- Enter the pre-tax subtotal and tax amount separately.
- Choose the tip percentage, tip basis and number of people.
- Use the lower/higher share breakdown if the total cannot split evenly in cents.
Frequently asked questions
Is the tax field a percentage?
No. Enter the actual tax amount printed on the bill.
What if the bill already includes tax?
Separate subtotal and tax if you want a pre-tax tip. Otherwise enter the full bill as subtotal, tax 0, and calculate on that amount.
Does it work with yen or other zero-decimal currencies?
This splitter uses two-decimal money units. Use it for currencies that divide into cents or pence; the currency converter handles JPY and KRW separately.
