Weighted average = Σ(score × weight) ÷ Σ(weights)

Weights sum to 100%. Course-specific rounding and extra credit are not included.

01 · UNDERSTAND

Formula & assumptions

Weighted grade = Σ(score × weight) ÷ Σ(weights)

A high-weight exam contributes more to the average than a low-weight assignment. Zero-weight rows are ignored. If weights total less or more than 100, this tool divides by their actual total and clearly identifies the normalized result. That is useful for completed work, but it does not treat unentered future work as zero or predict a final course grade.

Worked example

EXAMPLE

Scores of 90, 80 and 70 with weights 20, 30 and 50 give (90×20 + 80×30 + 70×50)/100 = 77%. An ordinary unweighted mean would instead be 80%.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter percentage scores and their matching weights.
  2. Set unused rows to a weight of zero.
  3. Check the weight total before using the average as a course grade.

Frequently asked questions

Must the weights add to 100?

No. They are normalized to the entered total. At least one weight must be positive.

Should a missing assignment be blank or zero?

If your course counts it as a zero, enter score 0 and its actual weight. Use weight 0 only to exclude it.

Can I average letter grades?

Convert grades to the numeric scale your course uses first. This tool accepts percentage scores, not a universal letter-grade mapping.
